Code of Ethics for AI Development: Acceleration within Guardrails

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to permeate various sectors, implementation of robust ethical guardrails becomes crucial to ensure AI's alignment with human values. The latest cross-sector & outcome-focused AI framework in the UK has introduced five overarching principles to be adopted by various regulatory bodies - safety, security and robustness, appropriate transparency and explainability, fairness, accountability and governance, and contestability and redress. Sensitivity to privacy concerns should guide this process, ensuring that sensitive personal information or confidential business-specific information is withheld to maintain individuals' privacy rights. As business leaders, we must explore and adopt alternative approaches, that do not require sharing sensitive data with AI models, and still benefit from its capabilities. This approach ensures that AI enhances operations without compromising privacy or ethical standards.
  • Human-in-the-loop (HITL): Ensuring fairness in AI requires a HITL approach to ensure vigilant monitoring and mitigation of bias throughout the development lifecycle. It is crucial to ensure that AI systems do not perpetuate or exacerbate existing inequalities. Humans must keep a check on the diverse datasets that AI systems should be trained on to prevent unjust differential treatment of individuals or groups and promote equitable outcomes. Additionally, human decision-making must remain central to validating outcomes, ensuring AI systems are designed to support rather than replace human judgment.
  • Transparency & Explainability: Transparency and explainability are essential for users to understand how AI systems operate and make decisions. Additionally, fostering a culture of continuous improvement enables organizations to iteratively enhance AI systems' ethical performance based on feedback and evolving best practices. Public consultation and stakeholder engagement across the system lifecycle can ensure that mechanisms are in place for individuals to challenge outcomes and receive remedies for errors or inaccuracies.
